Aloke Pillai: Co-Founder of Pastel HQ
Through each of these presentations, I have noticed that there is never a clear career path. We may have a set goal in mind, but the journey towards that goal is different for everyone. Pillai goes through his career path with a set interest in mind, which is business and design. However, when he talks about his journey, he goes through different paths to further develop his skills. Such as joining internships, competitions and finally starting a business.
What I found interesting is how he combined design with business. Pillai has also questioned how design would mix with business and through that question, he was able to create his own business that helps entrepreneurs on their design projects. Overall, it was interesting to hear the different pathways he took and the different skills he gained throughout his career. As Pillai mentions, there is never a clear direction, but it is always good to plan.

The 3 Reminders
Nearing the end of his presentation, he gave us incredible tips to help kickstart our career once we graduate. The first one really stuck with me after he told us his career journey, which is knowing our strengths, as well as our limits. As knowing our own skillset really sets our interests into what job one would want. Since I really enjoy arts and design, I feel like I would want to work on projects that would continue to develop my artistic skill. Going back to previous presentations, our personal interests and skills really setup our career path. I would want to continue nourishing those strengths of mine, but also learn new skills as well, for example coding! With these skillsets, I would want to continue developing these skills throughout my career. The next reminder/tip he gave us, is defining our own opportunities.
Finding a job is a hard task, but it can not be done simply by just sitting down and handing out resumes, it helps to build a connection and network with that company or in the industry itself. Building networks and actively being interested in the company helps into finding a job, especially one's dream job. As he mentions this in his presentation, I agree wholeheartedly. Being able to express one's values and skills, one would eventually get noticed in the industry and can see how passionate they are rather than just looking at an online portfolio or a resume. It helps to build connections and networks to further develop that relationship and express one's talents and values. For his final tip, he gave us advice on being able to think on the long term effects.
Being able to think about the long terms is a gift. He tells us to always keep learning, always keep developing your skills and expanding your interest. Through those interests, always look for opportunities in them. As what was mentioned in The Weather Network trip, always be open to every opportunity that comes your way.

Final Thoughts
Pillai's presentation was quite short, but still very informative like any other presentation. It was was short and to the point and quite a good change from previous presentations. His tips were all things we constantly hear, but it is always good to keep them in mind as we graduate. Being an organized person, it worries me how plans never go the way you want them too. However, I guess that's what makes the career path more fun as we will never know the things we will learn and gain along the way. Overall, it was a informative presentation that taught me to always expect the unexpected, knowing about our skills and interests and continuing to nourish them and always be open to opportunities.
