Trip to the Weather Network
The Weather Network
Our trip to The Weather Network was quite fun and very informative. We also got to take a look at the behind-the-scenes of forecasters telling the weather behind a green screen! We also got an insight into the type of workplace environment we would be getting into. As we began the tour, everyone was really welcoming which helped set the tone of the overall tour. Getting to meet other workers there, as well as learning about their backstory was very informative. One person apparently had no experience whatsoever, but still got to where he is today! Then we were able to meet someone at our age that had more of a linear path, but also took different opportunities along the way. One thing that stuck with me is what the women said about taking every opportunity that comes our way, even if it is not what we are hoping for, one may come to like it.
As someone who dislikes taking risks and likes to plan things out, I had trouble trying to understand this advice. Though, a part of me agrees with it because some things in life never go as planned and with that we have to take the chances that are offered to us. With this advice in mind and constantly be reminded of how things may not go as planned, I hope to prepare myself when these opportunities open up to me. Going forward into our tour, I noticed that no one really works alone, but together as
a team.

Teamwork
As we were taken around the area and being able to see people at work, I observed that tasks are never really done by ourselves, there is a whole team. Danielle gave us some insights on the process of working on a project and it focuses on the agile process. It is quite interesting how there are groups of people, possibly working on the same project and there is always more than one person. Being a student, we are in charge of everything within our projects, so it is nice to see that in a workplace environment, everyone has different roles to finish each project. Another part of the tour that I really like is going into the green screen room.
Green Screen Fun
This actually wasn't my first time being in a green screen room, as I have previously visited one before at my dad's workplace. Although, it is enjoyable to see it again! What was interesting about this segment in our tour is being able to experience a, somewhat live, forecast from a weatherman. It was interesting to see the process of what they do as it wasn't live! From what I remember during the presentation, it is all done in a sequence and there is a timer to notify them when it is their turn to talk. As well as being notified by their earpiece on who comes next. I find this quite interesting to see this firsthand as I was expecting to see someone else than the weatherman by himself! What was also interesting is that there was no script they go through, it is all done on the fly. If this were done, they would need to have the knowledge about everyday weather information, and it turns out he was quite passionate about learning them, thus being able to understand what is happening with the weather and can tell right away. Overall, it was a great experience to see in person the process of how the forecast is done.
Final Thoughts
The trip to The Weather Network was definitely fun and exciting, especially having some fun in the green screen room and playing with the props. It was also nice to explore the area and see how welcoming everyone was! I wish we spent more time at the top floor as it features many people at work and get to learn about each of their role within their group. I would've also liked to hear about the different projects they do as well. But, overall it was fun to explore The Weather Network and see the behind-the-scenes of what we usually see on TV and being able to observe the workplace environment.
